The way I've called her- Ninang Mahal (Beloved Godmother) started when I was very young. I have my 2 aunts (both sisters of my mother) who became my sponsors(one for baptism and one for confirmation). She suggested that I call her that to distinguish her from the other godmother and I loved it. I was a fast learner and pretty soon I was calling her that and until now I cannot call her with any other name. The name summarizes our relationship- something really special, a pet name that I'm not ashamed to speak wherever I am and in whatever company I'm in. I remember that when I was in my "tweens" we talk about a lot of things, yes even about guys, I never imagined that she will never marry since I met a couple of cute, intelligent guys when she was teaching at Ateneo that were obviously interested. She was very attractive with her refreshing smile, petite figure and smart conversations. She is well-versed in any subject but her favorite is science and religion. Her spirituality is not so much as "going to church everyday or praying the rosary " type but is reflected in the way she acts and speaks, always humble, selfless, kind and always willing to help. She was particularly interested in everything I got into when I was young and as I grew older. I remember what she told me when I had problems with my marriage. She was all encouragement and support, she told me I can make and I believed her and moved on with her prayers. One thing I distinctly remember were some nuns who came regularly to visit and kind of "recruit" her (thinking without a doubt that she was a good material), but she told me that she knows she was not meant to be a nun- I'm sure she gave it much thought, though. I'm going to miss her but I know she is with HIM now and will continue to guide and love all of us. Will you go to Simbang Gabi there in Heaven Ninang Mahal for yet another dream to come true?
